Sri Lanka Labour Laws & Employee Rights (Comprehensive 2025 Guide)

Minimum Wage Update

From 1 April 2025, the National Minimum Monthly Wage (NMMW) for private sector workers rose from LKR 21,000 to LKR 27,000, and the National Minimum Daily Wage (NMDW) from LKR 700 to LKR 1,080.

On 1 January 2026, the NMMW will be adjusted further to LKR 30,000 and NMDW to LKR 1,200.

Budgetary Relief Allowances are now included in the basic wage, which means all benefits (EPF, ETF, OT, gratuity) must be calculated based on this new base.

Working Hours & Overtime

Legal maximum hours: 8 hours/day, 45 hours/week

OT is voluntary and must be recorded in attendance systems.

Nursing Breaks: 2 daily breaks (30 mins if within factory premises, 1 hour if not)

Paternity Leave:

Public sector: 3 paid days

Private sector: Depends on contract or company policy

Leave Type Details:

  • Annual Leave 14 days/year after 12 months. First year based on joining month.
  • Casual Leave 7 days/year. First year: 1 day per 2 months worked.

  • Public Holidays Around 20–24 days including all Poya Days. Paid.
  • Weekly Holidays 1 day minimum. Saturday half-days are common practice.

Paid if employee has worked continuously for 5+ years in a company with 15+ employees

Amount: 0.5 month salary per each completed year
