Salary / Wages / Leave Guide 2026 – Sri Lanka

Salary / Wages / Leave Guide 2026 – Sri Lanka

(Based on Department of Labour standards and current labour laws)

In Sri Lanka, employers are legally required to comply with salary payment, wage rules, and leave entitlements set out under labour law. These rules protect employees and ensure fair treatment regarding pay, work hours, leave, holidays, and statutory benefits. If this process seems complicated or hard to manage, Formix — the best payroll management company in Sri Lanka — can handle everything for you accurately, timely, and in full legal compliance.

1. Salary and Wages – Basic Requirements

Payment of Salary / Wages

Employers must pay wages or salaries to employees in accordance with the terms of employment and applicable law.

Under the Wages Boards Ordinance, employers must fix a wage period not exceeding one month and pay wages accordingly:

  • within 3 days if the wage period is up to one week,
  • within 5 days if it exceeds one week but is ≤ two weeks,
  • within 10 days if it exceeds two weeks.

Minimum Wage and Allowances

Sri Lanka has a national minimum wage set by law. Wages Boards may revise minimum wages for specific trades, subject to overall minimum requirements.

Budgetary relief allowances may also be payable depending on monthly earnings. Failure to pay statutory allowances is an offence under the relevant law and can lead to penalties.

Overtime and Allowances

Overtime is generally due for work done beyond normal working hours.

Remuneration includes allowances such as cost-of-living or overtime allowances, where prescribed.

Formix Advantage:

We calculate correct salaries, overtime, statutory allowances, and schedule timely payments every payroll cycle, ensuring no legal disputes or penalties.

2. Working Hours & Rest Periods

Normal work hours and rest periods may be defined by law or employment contract.

Excess hours usually qualify for overtime under the appropriate rate, depending on the sector and applicable ordinance.

Formix Advantage:

We maintain accurate work hour and overtime records integrated with payroll to guarantee compliance and audit readiness.

3. Leave Entitlements

Weekly and Public Holidays

Employees covered under the Shop and Office Employees Act are entitled to at least one whole day and one half-day off each week with full remuneration if they have worked the qualifying hours.

Employees must also be granted public holidays officially declared as paid holidays. Nearly all public holidays are paid days off, up to the number declared by law.

Annual Leave

Leave with full pay is a statutory entitlement:

For service commencing between 1 Jan – 31 Mar: 14 days

Between 1 Apr – 30 Jun: 10 days

Between 1 Jul – 30 Sep: 7 days

Between 1 Oct – 31 Dec: 4 days

For subsequent years of continuous service: 14 days of annual leave, with at least 7 consecutive days.

Casual / Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to casual leave (e.g., for illness or personal matters) with full pay.

Leave entitlement is usually 7 days per year, with pro-rata entitlement during the first year (one day for every two months of service).

Full Moon (Poya) Holiday

Employees are granted a holiday on a full moon Poya day with payment.

4. Other Statutory Benefits

Maternity Leave

Female employees are entitled to maternity leave as recognised under the law — typically inclusive of pre-confinement and post-confinement paid leave

5. Deductions and Salary Compliance

Deductions from salary are only permitted under law or with employee consent.

Unauthorized deductions are prohibited and may result in enforcement action or penalties.

Formix Advantage:

We ensure only lawful deductions are applied and payroll is calculated with full compliance to Salary/Wages/Leave rules.

6. Legal Obligations of Employers

Employers must:

Pay salaries on time, within the prescribed periods.

Maintain accurate records of wages, hours worked, leave, and leave taken.

Respect statutory holiday and annual/casual leave entitlements.

Provide required allowances and avoid unlawful deductions.

Resolve disputes in accordance with labour law.

Failure to comply may lead to penalties, fines, or legal action by the Labour Department or courts.
